Facts about CERVICAL CANCER
Cervical
cancer is a leading cause of death due to cancer among Asian
women and poses serious public health concern. In India, it is
the most common malignancy according to National Cancer
Registry Program, 1988-89 report. There are nearly a million
cervical cancer cases reported with nearly quarter of a
million new cases being added every year. The age adjusted
cervical cancer incidence reported from some of the important
cities of India per 100,000 women population is; Mumbai–19.4,
Bangalore–26.4, Chennai–43.5, Delhi–30.1, Bhopal–24.3 & Barshi
(Maharashtra)–26.2.
• Human
papillomavirus (HPV)
is present in
99.7%
cervical carcinomas1.
In about 80% of sexually active women who get infected, HPV
may clear it in 6-8 months2,3,4.
Other
20%
may develop cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN)2 and
its persistent presence may progress through PRECANCER stages
to INVASIVE CANCER and may require radio- or chemotherapy or
surgery.
• The
sensitivity of Pap smears could vary between 35 to 85% in
correctly identifying high-grade
disease even in controlled studies5
against HPV testing ranging from 85 to 100%6.
•The
period of infection to Cancer development may be long, upto 15
years, challenging body’s immunity7.
•
Unlike
other cancers, Cervical Cancer is 100% PREVENTABLE and also
largely EASILY TREATABLE if detected in the early stages8.
